River Wall, Wapping, London, E1W
This section of the Thames Wall is located on a publicly accessible section of the Thames Path, the client approached us to provide a tied independent scaffold access to approximately 100m of the river wall. The scaffold was required to perform a series of tasks including repointing of brickwork, rendering, jet washing and general cleaning.
The Port of London Authority were responsible for issuing the licence to erect the scaffold. A full structural design of the scaffold was required along with detailed risk assessment, method statement and evidence of the relevant insurance levels needed for working in such a sensitive location
This project had several issues to overcome, the scaffold was to sit in the tidal stretch of the River Thames and would be subject to two tidal changes every 24-hour cycle. This required a detailed work schedule that could accommodate the low tides and the permitted working hours of a residential area.
The tidal power of the river along with the waves generated by boats using this busy stretch of the river meant that significant loads are imposed on the scaffold, the high tide also meant that the scaffold would be fully submerged.
Working with our scaffold structural designer we were able to come up with a solution to overcome these loadings and provide a safe working platform for the main contractor.
